This website contains information that will help beginners to machine knit. I will be adding posts that will help you to learn how to knit beautiful garments quickly and easily.

Machine Knitting

I love the concept of machine knitting. Creating beautiful garments quickly and easily. However the reality for many new machine knitters can be quite different.

Most machines are bought second-hand and may need cleaning and repairing before they work. Most books, patterns, etc. are old and out-of-date regarding types of yarn that you can use.

There are only a handful of machine knitting groups across the UK and few video recorders to play the old educational tapes or floppy disk drives for the old software. Machine knitting almost died a death at the turn of the century when machine and yarn manufacturers were going out of business.

Revival in Machine Knitting

Roll on 2019 and there has been a bit of a revival in interest. The Internet is enabling the spread of information about machine knitting to a new audience. Resources for machines, patterns and yarn are starting to expand again.

But it is still not easy to navigate your way through all the information. What machine should you buy? What yarn should you use? Where can I find patterns? The beginner has a load of questions that are difficult to answer. There is no one simple answer. Most machines are bought second-hand and may need some attention to make them work smoothly. There is no easier access to spare parts and YouTube has videos that can help you repair your machine. But it is still daunting to take in all the information.

I have spent a lot of time researching the information out there. It has been hard to find basic information for the beginner all in one place. There are lots of useful and wonderful resources out there. So I have decided to create my own blog, to record my own progress and more importantly to provide a useful site with links to all the information that you need to get you started.

Step-by-step Guide

If you are interested in learning to machine knit, but do not know where to start, then this blog is for you. My experience is currently focused on the use of Knitmaster knitting machines, but much of the information is of value for other types of knitting machine.

Through my posts, I aim to produce a simple guide that takes you step-by-step through the process of getting your machine, getting yarn, cleaning your machine, learning the basic knitting techniques, and starting to create basic garments.

Contents Page

Topics will be covered in my blog posts and for easy access I have included a Contents page where you can find easily find a list of posts divided into sections. The first posts will be all related to Getting Started.

I am using a Knitmaster standard gauge machine with punch-card (MOD 700) for my learning practice. (Update: Also using a Knitmaster standard gauge electronic which I have just got working). If you have a different machine you may still find a lot of the general information of value. I do include information about other machines whenever I can.

I do hope that you find the information on this website useful. If I have missed something, please ask me in the comments section. I will try to keep links up-to-date, but if you find one that does not work, please tell me so that I can check it out.

Lets start this knitting adventure.
